Female figure of the heroines of the Second World War , Winna-Jean Tierney, often received in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, will celebrate her 100 years on October 29. On this occasion, the town is launching an initiative to celebrate its centenary. The idea is to send postcards from Normandy to the veteran.
Winna-Jean Tierney has a special link with Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer ( Calvados ). It was on the airfield that she met her husband there on June 13, 1944.
They were married on June 26, 1946
In 2012, before receiving the Legion of Honor, the couple recounted their meeting. Edward Tierney was a pilot. "I was taking off on my Dakota C47 from the south of England with ammunition, food, equipment and everything the troops needed." In return, he embarked injuries accompanied by air nurses.
This is how love at first sight came about for Jean. "The flights were not always easy, but they were quick: 45 minutes between takeoff from Saint-Laurent and arrival in England", recalls Winna-Jean. We didn't have much care to give them, just the basic gestures. " Edward and John Winna evacuated prisoners of war, victims of the concentration camps.
The war ended, the pilot Edward Tierney married the nurse Winna-Jean on June 26, 1946. Three children were born from their union, one of them was killed in Vietnam in 1968.
Edward passed away on November 20, 2020 at the age of 98 . Winna-Jean currently lives in the United States. "This sending of postcards wishing Winna-Jean a happy birthday would be a surprise and an affectionate gift from a village, its inhabitants and a region she loves so much" , suggests the municipal team.
